Following MediaTek and Sunplus Technology, more Taiwan-based IC design houses are setting up subsidiaries in Sichuan, China to take advantage of cheaper and abundant R&D personnel available in the southwestern province, according to industry sources.

Boasting a total population of over 100 million people and a number of renowned universities, including Sichuan University, Southwest Jiaotong University, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, and Chengdu University of Technology, the province has attracted several Taiwan-based IC design houses to establish R&D facilities there, the sources noted.

Many people who have migrated from Sichuan to work in coastal areas in southern and eastern China have now decided to return to home and take up jobs at the R&D centers built up by Taiwan-based companies, the sources noted.

MediaTek said that its R&D center in Chongqing has become one of the best choices for those coming home to seek new jobs.
